Drive System

Overview

Two rear-mounted motors provide drive to the rear wheels. One motor is connected to each wheel. This removes the need for a complex gearbox or differential.

Potential Issues

  • Given 155/50x13" tyres, the motors will only be rotating at just over 1000rpm at 100km/h (62mph). This gearing will result in a slower accelerating vehicle. The only solution to this is a reduction gearbox. The reduction gearbox should increase the speed of the motor to the most efficient speed at the estimated cruising speed.

Rolling resistance/energy loss is more efficient with large diameter, narrow, higher air pressure tires, much as a racing bike compared to a fat tire bike. The Honda Insight uses narrow, high pressure tires.
